We are installing 3/4 x 9-1/4 boards and 3/4 x 2-1/2 battens right now... using 2-1/2 x .091 ring shank siding gun nails for the boards, and 16d HDG hand drives for the battens. Main problem I see is that you probably do not have horizontal blocking for your siding.
